Mentoring

Mentors are trusted adults who spend time getting to know a young person and to help them think about their life. Acting as a positive role model for the young person the mentors role is to befriend, offer guidance and support the young person hopefully helping them to move forward. Mentors may be volunteers or paid workers and offer a confidential service to young people.

The mentor and young person will agree how often they will be in touch, where they will meet and how the young person will benefit from them working together. Mentors may meet up with young people just to talk, to go to appointments or go to new places if that is what will help.

Mentoring can enable young people to deal with complex and distressing situations and get their life back on track.  Mentors have helped young people who have become withdrawn and isolated, or those who are having difficutlies with school or college.  It's practical, flexible help from someone who sees you as a person, not as a problem.

Northorpe Hall's Mentoring service has been certified an Approved Provider by the Mentoring and Befriending Foundation, recognising the quality support, management and training provided to mentors.

The mentoring service is for young people in Kirklees aged between 10 and 19 who are going through an unsettled period in their lives and would benefit from some informal, practical and flexible support. Anyone can request this service, young people themselves, parents/carers or professionals.  We are currently seeking funding for this service and so are unable to offer free mentoring at this time, and it costs around £35 an hour.
