FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions about counselling
What is counselling?
Counselling is talking to someone who will listen to anything you have to say. They will be sympathetic and supportive.
What will happen if I contact the service?
We have a simple form to fill in, and then we arrange for you to meet a counsellor. They will show you around and answer any questions you have, and explain in detail how counselling might work for you. If you want to, you can book in to see the counsellor regularly - usually every week for eight weeks.
What are the kinds of things young people talk about?
Some of the things young people want to talk about are feeling lonely or unloved, worries about their future, problems about school, bullying, drugs, pregnancy, illness, physical and sexual abuse, running away and concerns about parents, brothers, sisters and friends.
Will the counsellor tell anyone what we talk about?
Not unless you ask us to, or we believe that you or someone else is in danger. The service is confidential but we would tell someone else if you said you were hurting yourself or someone was hurting you. This would be discussed with you first. Your counsellor will talk to you about this on your first visit. To ensure that services for young people are as good as they can be, we also pass on anonymous details about drug and alcohol use.
Can I choose who I see, and where and when I see them?
Yes. We can offer counselling in Huddersfield, Dewsbury and here at Northorpe Hall in Mirfield. We have daytime and evening appointments. we have both female and male counsellors and also a female Muslim counsellor. However, you may have a longer wait if you are very specific about these things.
Counselling for Parents (available from May 2010)
What is the Counselling for Parents Service?
This is a new service that we are able to offer parents in Kirklees. In partnership with Kirklees Parenting Support Service we are able to offer free counselling to parents or carers of children accessing counselling at Northorpe Hall, who feel it would help them to improve their lives and that of the children in their care.
Northorpe Hall Child and Family Trust is a registered charity and provides professional independent counselling. We are a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
Who is this counselling for?
Being a parent is the hardest job in the world and the most important but sometimes things get in the way. We can all feel overwhelmed at some time in our lives and many people who have had counselling at these difficult times have found counselling really helpful.
Through counselling you may be able to improve the relationship between you and your child. If you are a parent/carer of a child or young person who has attended our counselling service, then you are eligible for one to one counselling sessions.
What is counselling?
Counselling is an opportunity to talk privately with a qualified counsellor, who is specially trained to listen to you carefully and work with you to find ways to understand your own feelings and how they influence your family.
Counsellors work in a non-judgemental and non-directive way, which means they will not blame you or tell you what to do. Counselling is not about teaching you parenting skills, but helps you to find your own solutions to your own concerns in your own way. Sessions can be just with you or with you and the young person who has already attended some counselling. Your counsellor will discuss this with you.
Each session will last around 50 minutes and will usually be at the same time and day each week. Appointments are available during the day as well as evenings. You may need three or four sessions or possibly more, but you can talk this through with your counsellor. We have male and female counsellors.
Is it confidential?
Anything you talk about will be treated sensitively and confidentially. Information you or other people give to us about you will only be shared within Northorpe Hall Trust. We have to report some information to funders to show that we have helped those caring for children through this counselling project.
Information you share with the counsellor will not normally be disclosed to anyone else. However, if you tell us that you, or another person or child in the family is in danger or at risk, we will agree how we can work together to keep everyone safe. This may mean talking with someone else outside of Northorpe Hall.
This will be discussed with you in your first session.
Where will the counselling take place?
Northorpe Hall is a calm, safe and welcoming place and we can offer counselling either here at Northorpe or at the Brian Jackson Centre in Huddersfield. To make the counselling more accessible to you we will need to know where you would like your counselling to take place.
