Kirklees Young Carers
For more information about the young carers service see www.kirkleesyoungcarers.org.uk
There are regular group activities, often at Northorpe Hall, and additional activities in school holidays, such as day trips or camping.
The service is in demand, and there is a full assessment for all those referred to ensure those most in need get priority.
A young carer is a young person between 8 and 18 years who has to spend a lot of time, as an adult would, caring for somebody in their family. Because of this they miss out on being a child/young person as well as having extra stress because of what they have to do.
Kirklees Young Carers is managed by Northorpe Hall Child and Family Trust in Mirfield, West Yorkshire.
Outside there is lots of space for activities in a safe and peaceful environment. Young Carer activities usually take part in the Annexe, a building which has recently been refurbished into a space that is an ideal place for young carers to meet.
Kirklees Young Carers Project Aims To:
Raise awareness of the needs of Young Carers
Identify and support Young Carers
To improve services and support for Young Carers
To enable the voice of Young Carers to be heard
Counselling
Northorpe Hall Counselling Service could help you. The service is available to young people aged up to 19 years, who are living or studying in Kirklees.
People are referred for all kinds of reasons including bereavement, problems with anger, family or other relationship difficulties, anxiety or a traumatic experience such as violence or abuse.
We offer:
- an accessible service - anyone can refer and the paperwork is simple
- a quick service (usually seen within three weeks of referral)
- a friendly and flexible service: a range of times and days up to 8pm and at welcoming venues in Huddersfield, Dewsbury and Mirfield.
- short term counselling - usually eight sessions
All our counsellors are diploma qualified and BACP registered. They are all experienced in working with children and young people.
From May 2010 we will be offering a counselling service for parents in Kirklees also.
See our counselling page for more details and FAQ's.
Mentoring
A mentor is an adult who can meet with a young person informally, wherever they agree to meet, to talk about anything and to help the young person to work out what they want to do.
A mentor may be a paid worker or a volunteer, and they will have had training to help them listen and understand the young person, and build up a trusting relationship.
Mentors can help with practical things - filling in forms, writing letters, going to appointments - as well as finding out about new activities or places to go. They can help young people make the changes they want to make in their life when things are difficult.
It is flexible, friendly support, just when you need it.
See our Mentoring page for more details.
