Young Carers

Young carers are amazing...

Young carers play a significant role in the care of a parent or sibling are some of the unsung heroes of our community.  They provide practical and emotional support for adults and siblings with disabilities and long term health conditions, including mental health problems.

The responsibility and demands of caring can mean that young carers miss out on friendships, out of school activities and even school itself.  This can lead to isolation and not doing as well as others in terms of qualifications, and so having fewer choices.  Young carers caring for a parent with mental health problems may particularly need additional support.

When there is a crisis, young carers often have no-one to turn to.  Northorpe Hall Child & Family Trust works with around one hundred young carers every year, forming strong, supportive relationships which enable them to grow in confidence, to look after themselves well and to strengthen support networks.

Kirklees Young Carers provides regular group activities for young carers at Northorpe Hall, as well as individual support for those who need it.  There are school holiday activities and projects, too.

The Young Carers Council makes decisions about the service, is involved in recruitment and strategic decisions for Northorpe Hall Trust and they often raise their own funds when they have particular activities they've set their hearts on.

If you know a young person who is a young carer in Kirklees who you think we could help, or if you could contribute to the service, please get in touch.

We accept referrals for the Young Carers service over the phone, Monday-Thursday between 10.00am-4.00pm, just call 01924 492183 to make a referral.
